You'll need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) or a visa

You must apply for either:

• an electronic travel authorisation (ETA)

• a Standard Visitor visa

You may want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa if you have a criminal record or you’ve previously been refused entry into the UK.

What you can and cannot do

You can visit the UK on holiday or to spend time with family and friends.

You can also do other permitted activities as a Standard Visitor.

While in the UK as a tourist, you cannot:

• do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person

• claim public funds (benefits)

• live in the UK for long periods of time through frequent or successive visits

• marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership. You’ll need a Marriage Visitor visa instead

What you need at the UK border

You must provide a valid passport or travel document. Your passport should be valid for the whole of your stay in the UK.

You may also be asked to prove that:

• you’re visiting for tourism

• you’re able to support yourself and your dependents during your trip (or have funding from someone else to support you)

• you’ve arranged accommodation for your stay

• you’re able to pay for your return or onward journey (or have funding from someone else)

• you’ll leave the UK at the end of your visit

The rules on what you’ll need to enter the UK may be different if you’re travelling from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

If you’re under 18 and travelling alone

Persons under the age of 18 years need to provide unabridged birth certificates along with other legal documents when travelling abroad

Children must usually have the same passport, visa or other international entry documentation required of adults

You may need to show a letter (Notarized from official authority) from your parent or guardian giving:

• their contact details and consent for you to travel to the UK

• the name, date of birth, address and relationship to you of the person you’re staying with

• their consent for you to stay with the person named in the letter

If you’re not staying with a close relative

Your parent or guardian must tell the relevant local authority about your visit if you’re both of the following:

• under 16 (or under 18 if you have a disability)

• going to be looked after for more than 28 days by someone who is not a close relative (called ‘private foster care’)

You should bring a reply from the local authority if you have one.

APPLICABLE if travelling with or visiting either your partner or a family member in the UK

You’ll usually need a visa to come to the UK

In most cases, you must apply for a Standard Visitor visa.

When you might not need a visa

You may be able to apply for a free family permit if your partner or family member is from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. They must have been living in the UK by 31 December 2020.

You’ll need a visa to come to the UK

Apply for a Standard Visitor visa.

If you have to apply for a Standard Visitor visa

You must apply for a Standard Visitor visaonline before you travel to the UK.

A Standard Visitor visa costs £127 for up to 6 months. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.

If you visit the UK regularly, you can choose to apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa instead.

You can pass through the UK to another country on a Standard Visitor visa. If transiting is your only reason for coming to the UK, you can apply for a Visitor in Transit visa instead for £70.

When applying for a tourist visa, the required documentation may vary depending on the country you're visiting, but here’s a general list of documents that most consulates require:

1. Valid Passport

   • Must be valid for at least 6 months after your intended stay.

   • Must have at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps.

2. Completed Visa Application Form

   • Filled out and signed.

3. Recent Passport-Sized Photos

   • Usually two color photos, white background, size depends on the consulate's requirements.

   • Biometrics

4. Travel Itinerary/Flight Booking

   • Proof of round-trip flight reservation (not the actual ticket, just reservation).

5. Proof of Accommodation

   • Hotel booking or invitation letter from a host.

6. Travel Insurance

   • Must cover medical emergencies, accidents, and repatriation.

   • Minimum coverage of $50,000 USD (varies by country).

7. Bank Statements/Proof of Sufficient Funds

   • Last 3-6 months’ bank statements.

   • Proof of ability to fund your trip and expenses.

8. Proof of Employment or Business Ownership

   • Employment letter, payslips, or company registration documents (if self-employed).

9. Invitation Letter (if applicable)

   • From a friend, relative, or business contact.
