Useful information: Driving in foreign countries and where to get an IDP

  • Driver's License in Canada

To legally rent and drive a car in Canada, you’ll need a driver’s license issued by the government of your province or territory and should be held for at least 2 years. If you have a valid license from your home country, you’ll probably be able to use this to drive in Canada for a short time after you arrive.

     A valid driver's license is:

    1. A license issued by a Canadian province, territory.

    2. A license issued by a US state, territory or possession.

    3. A license issued by a country that is a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1943 Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Automobile Traffic.

    4. A license issued by a country that has a reciprocal agreement with Canada.

    Tips

U.S. renters must provide valid license, temporary license in cases of lost, stolen or expired license, and chauffeur's license issued in the U.S. or a U.S. territory.

If your domestic driver's license is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP/IDL) or an official translation in English is required when you drive in Canada. Please note that an International Driving Permit (often referred to as an International Driver's License) does not replace the requirement for a regular driver's license. And you must carry your current overseas driver’s license, IDP or translation with you all the time when driving in Canada.

    Age Requirement

    1. The minimum driver age for renting a car at a Canadian rental office is 21 years old (age may vary by state and car category).

    2. If you're 21-25, you are likely to have to pay a young driver fee.

    3. If you're 65 or older, you may have to pay a senior driver fee.

*Attention! Some car rental companies would have different requirements. Please check Terms and Conditions during the booking process.

  • Below: For United States Citizens Traveling Abroad

The American Automobile Association (AAA) is the only organization in the United States that can issue an International Driving Permit (IDP) to U.S Citizens.

You can apply for an IDP in person at a AAA Travel office or by mail.

    Foreigners Driving in USA
If someone visits the United States from a foreign country and discovers that they need an IDP, can they purchase one from AAA?

An IDP must be issued in the same country as the driver’s license of the traveler. Therefore, if someone from the United Kingdom has a U.K. driver’s license, their IDP must also be issued in the United Kingdom.

    Driving in the United States

In order to drive in the United States, you must have some sort of valid government-issued driver’s license or permit to legally operate a vehicle.

In the United States, some safety laws are nationwide while others are state specific. Whether you obtain an International Driving Permit or apply for a full driver license, you need to understand these laws. Visit http://drivinglaws.aaa.com/ to learn the different laws and rules for driving a car, motorcycle, bicycle and more. Each state does vary so be sure to understand the rules for each state you are planning to drive in.

  • Driving in Mexico requires adherence to specific regulations, whether you're a visitor or a resident. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you understand the driver's license requirements:

    For Tourists and Short-Term Visitors:

    • Valid Foreign Driver's License: If you're visiting Mexico temporarily, you can legally drive using your valid driver's license from your home country. Ensure you carry it at all times while driving.

      usa.gov

    • International Driving Permit (IDP): While not mandatory, obtaining an IDP is advisable, especially if your license isn't in Spanish. An IDP serves as an official translation of your license and can be helpful during interactions with local authorities.

    • Vehicle Documentation: Always have your vehicle's registration and proof of insurance. Mexican law requires all drivers to carry valid insurance recognized within the country.

      progressive.com

    For Residents or Long-Term Visitors:

    • Obtaining a Mexican Driver's License: If you've decided to reside in Mexico, acquiring a local driver's license is recommended. The general requirements include:

      • Proof of Legal Residency: Documents such as an FMM (Visitor Permit), FM3, or FM2 visa.

      • Valid Passport: To verify your identity.

      • Proof of Address: Recent utility bills (e.g., water, electricity) or bank statements not older than 60 days.

      • CURP: Some states may require your Clave Única de Registro de Población (Unique Population Registry Code).

      • Birth Certificate: In certain cases, to confirm your age.

      • Driving Test: Depending on the state, you might need to pass a written and/or practical driving exam.

        accesslakechapala.com

    Important Considerations:

    • State-Specific Regulations: Mexico's driver's license requirements can vary by state. It's essential to consult the local transportation department for precise information.

    • Language of License: Licenses in English are generally accepted. However, if your license is in a non-Latin script, obtaining an IDP is strongly recommended.

    • Insurance: Regardless of your license type, ensure you have valid Mexican auto insurance, as foreign policies are often not recognized.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can ensure a safe and lawful driving experience in Mexico.

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Monaco, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

    1. AUSTRIA

To legally drive in Austria as a foreigner, it's essential to understand the specific requirements based on your country of origin and the duration of your stay.

      Short-Term Visitors (Tourists):

      • Non-EU/EEA License Holders: If you're visiting Austria for tourism and hold a driver's license from a non-EU/EEA country, you must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your valid domestic driver's license. The IDP serves as an official translation and is mandatory for driving in Austria.

Obtaining an IDP or Official Translation: Before arriving in Austria, secure an IDP in your home country. Alternatively, upon arrival, you can obtain an official translation of your driver's license from Austrian automobile clubs like ÖAMTC or ARBÖ.

License Conversion: Before the six-month period elapses, apply to convert your foreign license to an Austrian one. This process may require passing theoretical and practical driving tests, depending on bilateral agreements between Austria and your home country.

      • EU/EEA License Holders: Residents from EU/EEA countries can use their valid domestic licenses in Austria indefinitely. However, after establishing permanent residency, it's advisable (though not mandatory) to exchange your license for an Austrian one to facilitate administrative processes.

      Important Considerations:

        • Some countries have reciprocal agreements with Belgium, allowing for a direct exchange of licenses.

    1. Short-Term Visitors (Tourists)

    • International Driving Permit (IDP) + Home Country License

      • Recommended for visitors staying less than 3 months.

      • The IDP should be in English or Malay and issued by your home country’s licensing authority.

      • Carry your passport and visa for verification.

    • Foreign Driving License in English

      • If your national driver's license is already in English, you may use it without an IDP.

      • Non-English licenses must be officially translated into English or Malay.

    2. Long-Term Residents (Expats, Work Permit Holders)

    • If staying more than 3 months, you should:

      • Apply for a conversion of your foreign driver’s license to a Malaysian driving license (only for select countries under a reciprocal agreement).

      • If your country isn’t eligible for conversion, you must take a driving test in Malaysia.

    3. ASEAN Country Drivers

    • Drivers from ASEAN nations (e.g., Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, etc.) can use their national driver’s license without an IDP.

Where to Apply for an IDP or License Conversion?

    • The Road Transport Department of Malaysia (JPJ) handles license conversions.

    • Visit a JPJ Office with:

      • A valid passport & visa

      • A copy of your foreign driver’s license

      • A translation (if needed)

      • Passport-sized photos

      • A completed application form

    Additional Notes

    • Driving is on the left side in Malaysia.

    • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old (some require 23–25).

    • Some highways require an electronic toll payment system (Touch ‘n Go or RFID).
