A Brief History of the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands were first sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1503 during his fourth voyage to the Americas. Originally named "Las Tortugas" because of the abundance of sea turtles, the islands later became known as the Cayman Islands after the Caribbean crocodiles ("caimán") found in the area. The islands became a British Overseas Territory and remain under British governance today. Throughout history, Caymanians developed thriving maritime, fishing, and shipbuilding industries before evolving into a global financial and tourism powerhouse.
